ACTIVE VOICE AND PASSIVE VOICE
Active Voice and Passive Voice is one of the most important topics in English Grammar. It tests a student’s analytical and compre hension skills . Majority of the Students get confused Active Voice and Passive Voice with Direct and Indirect Speech.
Do remember: In Active and Passive Voice. The Tense will not be changed
- For example, If the question is given in Present Tense, More Precisely
- Simple Present&&.It remains in Simple Present and It won’t be converted into Simple Past
- Example :
I speak English&&&Active Voice
- English is spoken by me&..Passive voice
- We haven’t converted the above sentence into Past Tense but the Structure has changed .
- Let us take an example to understand the concept Active voice and Passive voice.
Example:
- Rohith plays Cricket&&..Active Voice
- Cricket is played by Rohith..&.Passive Voice
- In Active Voice the Subject (Rohith) tells us the action is done by the doer(Subject-Rohith)
- In the Passive Voice the Object (Cricket) becomes Subject and it was done by the Object-Rohith
- In a simple manner, In Active voice the Action is being expressed directly.
In Passive Voice, the Action that is being expressed indirectly
Before going to Answer the Active voice and Passive voice, keep the following points in mind.
1.The Object of the Active voice (A.V) becomes Subject of the Passive voice (P.V)
2.The Subject of the Active voice becomes Object of the Passive Voice(P.V)
3. The Auxiliary verb is decided by the Tense, Singular and Plural.
The Subject of the Passive voice (Earlier it is the object of the Active voice)
4. If the Subject is in
(i) Present Tense & Singular : Use the Auxiliary verb am or is
(ii) Present Tense Plural :Use the Auxiliary verb are
5. If the Subject is in
(i)Past Tense & Singular :Use the Auxiliary verb ‘was’
(ii)Past Tense & Plural : Use the Auxiliary verb ’were’
6. Write the Past participle (V3) form of the given verb
7. Finally, Write the word ‘by’ before the Object
The Structure of Passive voice is
Subject+A.v+Past
Participle(V3)+by+Object
Note:We cannot write a Passive voice without an Object
e.g 1. The birds fly &
2. He likes&
- In the above two sentences object is not given therefore we cannot write Passive Voice
Remember the following table while converting Active voice into Passive voice

Example: I Speak English&..Active voice
- English is Spoken by me&.Passive voice
- Here the Object(English) of the Active voice becomes the Subject of Passive voice
- So, first write English
- Then, The Auxiliary verb is decided by the tense of the Active voice and Singular or plural Subject of the Passive voice
- Speak is in Present tense
- English is Singular
- Present Tense & Singular use the Auxiliary verb ‘is’
- Write the Past participle form (V3) of the given verb Speak
- V1=Present tense=Speak
- V2=Past Tense=Spoke
- V3=Past participle=Spoken
- So, The Past participle(V3) is Spoken
Then write by - Finally ,Write the Accusative form of the I
- i.e for Subject I Accusative form is me
The Answer is
English is spoken by me&&.Passive Voice
2. They played Cricket&..Active Voice
- Played is in Past Tense,and the Subject of the passive voice is Cricket which is singular
- Past Tense and Singular write the Auxiliary verb was
- Write Past participle of the Verb played;i.e (V3) played
- Write the word by after Past participle
- Finally, Write the Accusative form of They
- i.e They(Nominative)&&Them(Accusative)
The Answer is:
Cricket was played by them&.Passive Voice
3. We are eating bananas&&Active Voice
- Bananas are being eaten by us&..Passive Voice
- Here the Subject of the Passive voice Bananas in plural form
Bananas–Plural, Eating — Present continuous
4. We are eating a banana&&Active Voice
A banana is being eaten by us&..Passive voice
Note: When a continuous tense (verb + ing) is given in the Act ive Voice then write ‘Being’ be fore the past participle (V3).

Verb+being+Past
participle(V3)+by+Object
- Banana–Singular
- Eating–Present Continuous
- Present tense & Singular;write the Auxiliary verb ‘is’
- Past participle of eat is eaten(V3)
- Object form of we is us
- A banana is being eaten by us&..Passive voice
5. She has taken a book
- A book has been taken by her.
- Write has been When the sentence is in Present Perfect Tense.
6.We have purchased a car&.Active Voice
- A Car has been purchased by us&.Passive Voice
- Here the above sentence is in Present Perfect Tense Car &..Singular&
- Present Tense and Singular so write the Auxiliary verb has
NOTE: Do not answer like this
If there is Has in a sentence then the answer must be has been in Passive form Simil arly, If there is Have then the answer must be Have been in the Passive form. Care must be taken according to the subject and object of the given sentence. Look at the following examples to unde rstand the above mentioned exceptional rule meticulously.
- I have a nice Pen
- They have a wonderful building
- She has a gold chain
- The above three sentences are in possessive case
- In case of Possessive case

A Car has been purchased by us&.Passive Voice
7. They have distributed sweets&.Active Voice
- Sweets have been distributed by them&.Passive voice
- The Above Sentence is in Present Perfect Tense
Sweets&.Plural
Present Tense and Plural form; write the Auxiliary verb have Past participle form of distributed is Distributed(V3)
The Answer is
- Sweets have been distributed by them&.Passive voice
8. He had done a work&..Active voice
- A work had been done by him&Passive voice
- had done is in past perfect tense
- a work&Singular
- Past tense and Singular
- Write the Auxiliary verb had
- A work had been done by him&Passive voice
9. He will play chess&..Active Voice
- Will—–Will be
- Chess will be played by him
Note: Future with will,shall,can,may the write the Passive form

Or - I was given a book by him&.Passive voice
- By is not used in this kind of sentence
16.I know her&.Active voice
- She is known to me&Passive voice
- Her(object form) for this the subject form is She
- Know is in present tense
- So the Auxiliary verb is is
- She is known to me&Passive voice
Negative sentences:
17.They do not sing a song&Active voice.
A song is not sung by them&Passive voice
18.She does not write novels&Active voice
Novels are not written by her&Passive voice
