IELTS Exam & Pattern
- The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test taken by students who want to work, study or migrate to a country where English is a native language. It is widely accepted across many countries and organizations. Each institution may have its minimum score requirements. Check on the official websites or use for quick reference: https://www. ielts. org/about-ielts/who-accepts-ielts-scores.
IELTS & Types - IELTS has two formats: Academic and General. The Academic test suits those wanting to study in an English-speaking environment or university (higher education) and also for professional registration. At the same time, the General is suitable for those applying to study below degree level (like an English-speaking school or college). It can be taken for work or employment training purposes. In some countries, it is used for migration purposes.
- It is available as Computer-based/ Paper-based tests. In a computer-based test, you can highlight text and make notes. It will be helpful for passages in the reading section. You can avoid spelling mistakes and save time by copy-pasting answers wherever possible. Automated Word counters can be used to check word limits in writing tasks. The computer-based test gives results faster. We encourage students to take it from the test centre. Based on your preparation and availability of test dates, book exam slots. The exam fee is approximately Rs 16,250
IELTS Pattern - The test has 4 sections. The Academic and General Training have the same Listening and Speaking tests but different Reading and Writing tests. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections of all IELTS tests are conducted on the same test day, while the Speaking test may be scheduled up to a week before or after the other tests. The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
- Each IELTS section score is given on a band of 9, and the total score is also given on a band of 9. Considering the analysis report of the average scores scored by Indian students, we encourage our students to target at least IELTS 7 band in all sections.
- IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training is accepted internationally. However, if you plan to study, work or move to the UK, you need to take an IELTS test approved for UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) purposes known as IELTS for UKVI. The test pattern is the same. However, it has a different score report and security features.
Listening - The test duration is 30 minutes. The audio recordings will be of native English speakers; listen to them and write your answers. The audio will be played only once. The recordings will be a mix of conversations and monologues. The audio files are based on everyday social contexts, discussions, or academic subjects. There will be around 10 questions per audio, 40 questions.
- In a paper-based test, you will be given around 10 minutes extra to transfer answers into the answer sheet. On the other hand, In the computer-delivered Listening test, it is different. You are given time to read your questions before starting any part of the Listening test. You have two minutes to review your answers after finishing the Listening test. The duration of the Listening test is approximately. 30 – 36 minutes
Academic Reading - This section is 40 questions and 60 minutes. No extra time is given for transferring answers.
- Reading skills are tested in this section. Students must develop the ability to understand the main idea and flow of content, skimming and scanning, reading for detail, and recognizing the purpose or opinions.
- Spelling and grammar matter when you write your answers.
General Training Reading - This section is also for 60 minutes. However, the size of the passages and the areas from which the passages are asked are different from academics.
- The reading passages come from material you encounter daily in an English-speaking environment.
- There are three sections. Section 1 may contain two or three short texts or several shorter texts. Section 2 comprises two texts. In Section 3, there is one long text.
Academic Writing & General Writing - Both have two tasks, and the test duration is 60 minutes.
- Task 2 in both is like essay writing. You will be asked to write an essay of 250 words in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. However, they differ in Task 1. Academic Task 1 is an illustration (visual information) given: a graph, table, or diagram. You are required to describe, summarise or explain it in your own words. General Task 1 is to write a letter based on a given situation. It may be personal, formal, or semi-formal. Task 1 word limit is 150 words.
Speaking Test - The test is for 11-14 minutes. It could be face-to-face or video call-based in some centres. It has 3 parts.
- Part 1- Introduction and Interview. The examiner asks about familiar topics such as home, family, work, studies, and interests. It lasts for 4–5 minutes.
- Part 2 – Individual long turn. You will be given a task card with the topic and some points to cover. You are given 1 minute to prepare. You will be asked to talk for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Part 3 – discussion. The examiner and the test takers discuss issues related to the topic in Part 2. Part 3 lasts 4–5 minutes.
- Your ability to talk for some time, express your views, and speak clearly is evaluated.

- IELTS is a skill-based exam which needs both practice and feedback from your trainers. Complete your preparation and take mock tests before the actual test.
IELTS and Other exams - Though IELTS and TOEFL test on similar sections, they differ in duration, score patterns and fee structures. PTE also tests on similar sections but varies in other aspects.
- Though IELTS and duolingo test on similar sections, duolingo is comparatively accepted by a smaller number of institutions. It can be taken anytime and gives results much faster than IELTS.
- Choose the test scores accepted by the university of your interest, and plan.
